In PROVYS we have four releases per year, one every three months: February, May, August and November. The last one is the special one, LTS, Long-Term Support release, where we focus on bigger technological changes and system stability. For curiosity, the number of tickets included in this release was 1140. You can see it has been keeping us busy! There is a variety of small fixes, new features, development and internal tasks.

WHY to keep your software updated?

A lot of people ask themselves, If the version I have is working fine, why to change anything? Keeping your software updated is essential to ensure security, fix bugs, improve performance, and access the latest features and compatibility enhancements.

What upgrading means to you, our client? We just need 10 days!

In ideal general scenario an upgrade should be done quarterly or annually and the scenario should be the following: Feature Freeze kicks off Thursday, with the upgraded test database handed over on Monday. The go/no-go decision is set for Friday after testing, and the upgrade will take place over the weekend. To ensure a safer process, extending the Feature Freeze by two weeks for preliminary upgrades and testing is also an option. Of course smaller clients can upgrade faster and bigger customised clients in some cases need to receive extra care.

Please note: In case you haven’t upgraded in the last years, there first needs to be a bigger upgrade to have your system up to date.

What is LTS – Long Term Support release, and should you choose it?

Every year the November release is the Long-Term Supported version. This means, that this version will be actively supported for the following 2 years. You will receive fixes, but won’t need to upgrade every quarter.

And what actively supported means?

Patches work like magic band aids delivering possible bug fixes. Important technical updates are thoroughly tested and remain stable till next LTS release. We also announce features that will no longer be supported in the next long term release, giving customers time up to two years to adapt. If you only want to update once per year, this is a good choice.

Why all this information?

This newsletter and article place special emphasis on clear explanations and thorough introductions. Since it’s our first update in a long time, we wanted to give it extra care and attention. Transparency and alignment with you are our priorities, and we hope this effort reflects that.
